Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is world-renowned for the beauty and diversity of the Cape flora it displays and for the magnificence of its setting against the eastern slopes of Table Mountain.

Kirstenbosch grows only indigenous South African plants. The estate covers 528 hectares and supports a diverse fynbos flora and natural forest. The cultivated garden (36 hectares) displays collections of South African plants, particularly those from the winter rainfall region of the country. It was founded in 1913.

The Kirstenbosch Tea Room was built in 2003 to replace the popular Tea Room built in 1924 and demolished 75 years later, in 1999. The old favourites like fish and chips and bangers and mash are served with contemporary flair and many new exciting dishes have been added to the extensive menu.

Caffė Botanica is an excellent spot for a light lunch, coffee break or snack. Patrons can sit on the balcony with a lovely view of the mountain, stay inside or sit in the courtyard. Open daily from 08h00-17h30, but may close earlier in winter. Caffė Botanica can be visited without entering the garden or paying the garden entrance fee.

The Botanical Society Bookshop, located in the Visitors'' Centre, is open every day from 09h00-18h00. It sells a wide range of books on flora, gardens, gardening, fauna and natural history, educational children’s books, as well as stationery and gift cards.There is a smaller, satellite Botanical Society Bookshop at the Centre for Home Gardening (Gate 2), trading every day from 09h00-16h30, selling the same range of books as the main shop.

The Garden Centre is an exclusively indigenous nursery. A wide range of plants including bulbs, succulents, ground covers, trees, shrubs, climbers, annuals, fynbos plants and herbaceous material is on sale as well as garden related hardware, pots, garden implements, and various landscape materials.

FLORA, FAUNA AND HIKING

The garden is home to many bird species (including breeding owls, guinea fowl and sugarbirds) and small endemic mammals (Cape Fox, small grey Mongoose, and Cape Otter). For hiking enthusiasts, Skeleton Gorge and Nursery Ravine offer panoramic trails and getaways to the top of the Mountain.



Getting Here

By Bus
There is a bus service to Kirstenbosch from Cape Town and Mowbray Station on working weekdays and the CitySightSeeing buses also visit.

By Car
Kirstenbosch lies 13 km from Cape Town city centre. From the city, take De Waal Drive (M3) in the direction of Muizenberg, at the first traffic light intersection turn right (southwards) into Rhodes Drive (M63) and follow the signs to Kirstenbosch.

Enjoy a standard tour of this World Heritage Site which is 3.5 hours long, including the two half-hour ferry rides.  Kids rule when it comes to this trip as Robben Island Museum is offering free entry for a child from 0 – 17 year old when accompanied by a paying adult.

The view of Cape Town from the island is one that will be etched on your mind forever and the natural landscape of the island, the fascinating history and a visit to Nelson Mandela’s prison cell will enthral. And, with soccer on everyone’s lips, conjure up a picture of Madiba and his fellow inmates playing soccer in the prison yard and it is easy to see how important this sport is to the nation. Off into the suburbs and first stop must be Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden where free entry for children from 0 – 17 years makes it the ideal place to go for a walk, enjoy our natural plant heritage or simply enjoy the many activities on offer.

Silver Tree Restaurant’s free children’s entertainment programme will delight whilst Moms and Dads also get an opportunity to wind down with the restaurant’s indoor winter concert series on Sunday nights.

There’s a joint Exhibition of Contemporary Fine Art, featuring Tony Butler, Paul Dixon, Dale and Mel Elliott, Maurice Fearns and James Yates, amongst others from 12 June to 18 July in the Lecture Hall for art lovers whilst “Untamed”, a collaborative project that explores the restoration of the lost balance between man and nature, opens in early June.

Then, when it’s time for a bite the Soup Festival at the Kirstenbosch Tea Room offers two vegetarian soups: vegetable & barley or Moroccan spicy black bean, two meat soups: beef goulash or pea & ham for a tasty warming winter filler.

Next stop is Constantia Vineyards and kids can enjoy a colouring in competition at Groot Constantia plus a free packet of sweets on completion.

The Constantia Valley is the oldest wine-making region in the southern hemisphere, dating back to 1685, and is today the Cape’s most intimate wine route consisting of eight wine farms, each with their own distinctive heritage and premium wines.

Enjoyed by Napoleon Bonaparte and royalty in the 18th century, Constantia Valley’s unique combination of terroir and climate produces some of the world’s finest wines that continue to this day to win accolades and international awards for consistently high standard and quality.

The wonderful homestead of Groot Constantia (where winemaking began more than 350 years ago) is a fabulous day out for all the family. Whilst Dad and Mom explore the homestead or enjoy a cellar tour and wine tasting the kids can enjoy a colouring-in competition and get a free packet of sweets when finished. End the day with a delicious meal at any one of the Estate’s excellent restaurants. (Offer valid from 27 June to 19 July).

Situated on the slopes of the Constantiaberg Mountains, Constantia Uitsig, meaning ‘Constantia View’, is aptly named for its unique position which offers wide vistas of mountains and vineyards. From the 1st of May to 30th September 2010, Mondays to Thursdays, one child per dinning adult eats free at River Café situated at the entrance of Constantia Uitsig Estate.

River Café has long been a popular social haunt in the Constantia Valley and is well known for its sumptuous breakfasts, lunches and afternoon teas. This popular meeting spot has undergone a re-awakening by none other than Luke Dale-Roberts, Executive Chef of La Colombe. Luke has appointed his protégé, Scot Kirton, as the Head Chef of the new River Café.
